FAQ

How would I type these without this page?

On Windows you can hold Alt and type a decimal code on the numeric keypad, or open the Character Map app. On macOS, Control-Command-Space opens the character viewer. Both routes need you to know the code or the exact Unicode name, which is why copying from a list is usually quicker.

Why does a symbol show as an empty box?

The font in use has no glyph for that character. The copied value is still correct and often displays properly somewhere else. Since the person reading your document may have the same gap, prefer widely supported characters in anything you send out.

What is the difference between ㎡ and m²?

㎡ is a single composed character; m² is the letter m followed by a superscript two. They look alike but sort, search and process differently, and some systems normalise one into the other. Use m² for web text and data. Both are on this page.

When would I use an invisible space?

A non-breaking space stops "10 kg" splitting across a line break. A zero width space marks a point where a long URL is allowed to wrap. Be careful: some systems strip or reject these characters, so keep them out of form fields, filenames and passwords.

Why do the circled numbers stop at ⑩?

Only the commonly used ones are here. Unicode goes to 50, but fonts frequently lack the higher ones and they render as boxes. Above ten, writing (11) in plain characters is safer everywhere.

Where are my recently used symbols stored?

In this browser only. Nothing is sent to a server or synced to your other devices, and Clear removes them immediately. In a private window they disappear when you close it.
